Word Family

Read each word out loud as its first letter slides in.

What Word Family practices

Word Family practices reading in chunks. The ending, or rime, stays pinned in place while a new first letter slides in front of it: -at becomes sat, pat, cat, rat and hat; -an becomes pan, fan, can and man; -and becomes band, land, hand and sand.

Seeing the chunk hold still teaches your child to read it as one piece and change only the first sound. That two-part blending is often the breakthrough for children who lose track of a word sound by sound.

Who it suits

Beginning readers around ages five and six, and anyone who knows their letter sounds but finds blending three separate sounds hard. Rhyming families also make it a cheerful choice for English learners.

How a round goes

Your child reads each word out loud as its first letter slides in. Each word gets three tries; if it is still tricky, the buddy says it and the next letter slides in after a short pause.

One round is a run of up to four words in the same family, so a ring covers several families in a few minutes. With the microphone off, a grown-up can mark each read instead.

A tip for home

Write a family ending like -ig on a card and keep a pile of first letters beside it. Take turns sliding a letter in front: big, dig, fig, pig, wig. Then try a silly one like zig and laugh about whether it is a real word.

Try next

  • Flash Word — reads short words quickly once the chunks feel easy.
  • Read the Word — reads brand-new words with no family to lean on.
  • Change a Sound — swaps sounds in the middle and end, not just the start.
  • Stretchy Blend — goes back to sliding through each sound when a family word still feels hard.

The browser asks for the microphone the first time your child needs to speak, never before. If you say no, you can mark each answer right or not yet instead.
