Flash Word
Watch for the word, then say it out loud before the buddy.
What Flash Word practices
Flash Word builds automatic word reading, recognizing a short word quickly instead of sounding it out every time. A word such as sat, pin, dog or sun flashes for a moment, and your child tries to say it before the owl buddy does.
Words are short and decodable, so your child can always work them out. The game is about making that work faster, which is what turns slow, effortful reading into smooth reading.
The word shows for just over a second, and the buddy waits around six seconds before taking its turn, so there is real time to think even though it feels quick.
Who it suits
Children who can already sound out short words and are ready to speed up, usually around ages six to eight. It suits a child who reads accurately but slowly.
How a round goes
The game says “Quick! Read it before I do.” and the word flashes. If your child reads it, they see “You beat me!”. If not, after a little wait the buddy says “My turn!” and reads it, with no buzzer and no visible clock.
It feels like a friendly race. With the microphone off, a grown-up can mark each read. Five quick words make a ring in a minute or two.
A tip for home
Write five words your child already reads on cards and flash each one for a second. Count the ones read before you could say them, and try to beat that score tomorrow. Keep the words easy; speed comes from success.
