Change a Sound
Drag the new letter onto the sound it changes.
What Change a Sound practices
Change a Sound practices phoneme substitution, the skill of swapping one sound to make a new word. The game shows a pictured word in letter tiles and says, for example, “This says box. Make it say fox!”
Early swaps use the first letter sounds: pin to pan, dog to dig, map to mop, pot to pop, tin to pin, top to pop. When the new letter lands, the picture morphs into the new word, which shows clearly that changing one sound changes the meaning.
Who it suits
Readers around ages five to seven who can blend short words and are ready to see that words are built from sounds that can be moved around. It also strengthens spelling for older children who leave out or mix up vowels.
How a round goes
A new letter tile waits below the word. Your child drags it onto the letter it should replace. If it lands in the wrong place it springs back, that spot wiggles, and the sentence is said again. From the second miss, the right spot glows with a bouncing hand to guide the way.
Each round is one change, and the next pictured word follows on its own. Five changes make a ring in about three minutes.
A tip for home
With magnetic letters, build cat and say, “Can you make it say hat?” Let your child find which letter to swap. Then go on a chain: hat, hot, hop, top. A chain of four or five words is a tidy little game in itself.
Try next
- Build the Word — builds the whole word from its sounds, not just one change.
- Silly or Right? — reads two words that differ by exactly one sound.
- Word Family — swaps the first sound again and again while the rest stays put.
- Same or Different? — hears whether two words differ by one sound before swapping it.
