Read the Line
Read the line out loud, all the way to the end.
What Read the Line practices
Read the Line is oral reading of one whole sentence from a little ReadPals story, such as “A frog can hop.”, “The dog can run.” or “The fish is in a dish.”. Your child reads it aloud from the first word to the last.
Reading a full line asks for steady blending across several words, plus holding the meaning together. The line passes once every word in it has been read, even if that takes more than one go.
Before any story has opened up, the line is a short phrase stitched together from words your child can already read, so the first lines are always within reach. As more sounds are learned, real story lines take over.
Who it suits
Children who can read short words and are starting on sentences, usually around ages five to seven, and older beginners building fluency. Lines are built from words your child’s sounds already cover.
How a round goes
The game says “Read this line out loud.” and listens. Words read correctly are kept, so a second try only has to fix what slipped. After three tries the game moves on.
With the microphone off, a grown-up can mark the line Yes or Not yet. A line takes under a minute, and five lines make a calm, short practice.
A tip for home
Let your child read a line twice: once to work it out, once to say it smoothly like talking. The second read is where fluency grows, and it nearly always sounds better, which feels good.
Try next
- Story Time — reads a whole story page by page, then answers a question.
- Read and Do — shows understanding of a sentence by acting it out.
- Flash Word — speeds up single words so sentences flow more easily.
- Read the Word — goes back to one new word at a time when a whole line feels like too much.

The browser asks for the microphone the first time your child needs to speak, never before. If you say no, you can mark each answer right or not yet instead.
